Do you know why you really want the job?

Both employer and employee are equally important, and approaching an interview from this perspective can help enhance the way you navigate questions.

As one of Perth’s leading employment agencies since 1991 we are here to provide a few insights into nailing your answers at your next job interview.

Research, Research, Research

When a potential employer asks ‘why do you want this job?

They are really asking several questions:-

·      Why do you want to join our company specifically?

·      What about this role appeals to you?

·      Why will you be the perfect fit for this job?

·      How can you strengthen our team?

Researching the company of the role you’re applying for is a great way to show initiative and create a deeper understanding of their history, experience, and values. All organisations have positive and negative feedback. On many occasions, even if there is negative feedback you’ll find it beneficial to make up your own mind after an interview.

Finding out things such as:-

·      When were they established?

·      How did the Director and Management get their start in the business?

·      How have they grown?

·      What are their goals as a Company?

·      Do they have brand words they use and what are they?

With your new found knowledge, y ou can ensure your answers are more powerful. By utilising keywords and phrases used on their website or social media, you can show you really know your stuff.

Showing you’ve taken the time to gain background understanding of the company is a great way to get the ball rolling and affirm you are a person who will pay attention to the detail.

Be specific

It can be tempting to come across as ‘flexible’ and ‘up-for-anything’ by giving broad responses that are open to interpretation. However, it is much more reassuring to employers to receive direct, specific answers.

When demonstrating your knowledge of the company, make sure to use unique details that can’t be tailored to any interview. Your answers can be something simple like when or where they were established, or even the name of the CEO or Founder.

Likewise, when talking about yourself, be direct and concise. Explain how your attributes can strengthen the team. Verbalise how the company values align with yours. Point out what may make you stand out from other applicants.

Displaying confidence and awareness of your personality type, experience and skills can help highlight why you are an asset.

Don’t be afraid to get personal – but not too personal. Sharing information such as hobbies, personal interests and pets adds another layer of depth. You may even find you have things in common.

At the end of the day companies are composed of individual people working together to achieve goals. Teamwork and communication are at the heart of any successful business and people are personal.

You should feel welcome, respected, and assured that your values align with your prospective employer – your personality should fit.

An interview is a ‘get-to-know-you’ session, so don’t be afraid to share some personal details about yourself [just don’t get too personal].

Find a way to give yourself a personal touch, and tie it back into how excited you are at the opportunity of joining them.

Every application is a chance to find a fulfilling new role.It should be an exciting conversation, nota a daunting one. There is no perfect answer either, so remember to be yourself.
